Climate as a Motive to Diversify
Santiago, Chile & The Mediterranean Climate
Following the research, cataloguing and drawing of over 50 collective housing projects in Santiago a thesis emerges claiming climate as a motive to diversify. In Mediterranean climates (Köppen Csa/Csb) opportunities present themselves to developing indoor/outdoor spaces best characterized as pleasant grey zones for their ambiguity of atmosphere. These conditions are well suited to diversify and experiment in building envelope and interior/exterior spaces.
From the peristyles of ancient Greece creating thickened perimeters to the Crystal Palace of the 19th century and contemporary greenhouse winter gardens extending outdoor living through the seasons the in between provides situations of living well suite to the Mediterranean climates and beyond.
