A young family was outgrowing their existing home and underutilizing a shady yard. An ADU addition over an existing garage and a new pavilion extend the functions of the house (and work) through the property. Adaptive form and interpreted materiality nod to the original design, while providing the space and surfaces needed for current and anticipatory uses.
Pops of bright seasonal color ground the new structures and tie into the existing front yard planting. The square becomes a repeating motif in the project from the plan layouts and window sizes down to the shingle cladding.
Here the ADU never stands in isolation. It becomes an extension of its main house, yard and neighborhood. By separating and pushing the new unit and pavilion to the corners of the yard, they each engage a central green which become both an extension of the discrete structures and an outdoor room in its own right.
